🌞 Sunscreen Isn’t Optional—It’s Essential
Let’s get one thing straight: sunscreen is not just for the beach. It's your ride-or-die skin protector, 365 days a year—even when it’s cloudy, even when you're inside, and especially if you're investing in facials, peels, or treatments.
But as an esthetician, I see it all the time—clients who wear SPF… wrong.
So if you’re applying a pea-sized drop of SPF at 8:00 AM and calling it a day, this post is your glow-up call.
🔥 SPF Facts Most People Get Totally Wrong
❌ 1. “My makeup has SPF, so I’m covered.”
Nope. Makeup with SPF is like putting sprinkles on a salad and calling it dessert.
It’s not enough—and it’s not layered thickly enough to protect your skin.
âś… Do this instead: Wear a standalone sunscreen under your makeup for full protection. Then use an SPF setting mist or powder for reapplication.
❌ 2. “I only need SPF when it’s sunny.”
The sun’s UV rays are like that ex who won’t leave you alone—they’re always around. Up to 80% of UV rays still penetrate through clouds and windows.
âś… Do this instead: Apply sunscreen daily, rain or shine, indoors or out.
Blue light (from screens!) can also affect melanin production.
❌ 3. “One application lasts all day.”
SPF isn’t a one-and-done. It breaks down every 2 hours, faster if you’re sweating, swimming, or rubbing your face.
âś… Do this instead:
-
Keep your sunscreen in your bag.
-
Set a phone reminder to reapply.
-
Use a powder or mist SPF to layer over makeup without messing it up.
❌ 4. “Dark skin doesn’t need sunscreen.”
I get real passionate here. Melanin offers some protection—but not nearly enough.
Hyperpigmentation, sunburn, and skin cancer still affect Black and brown skin.
âś… Do this instead: Use a non-chalky, melanin-friendly SPF that blends into deeper tones.

❌ 5. “I don’t need SPF if I work inside.”
Guess what: windows don’t block UVA rays. If you sit near a window, scroll your phone, or binge Netflix in front of the sunlit blinds—you need SPF.
âś… Do this instead: Make SPF part of your morning skincare routine like brushing your teeth. No exceptions.
🧴 How to Choose the Right SPF (Without Guessing)
There are two main types of sunscreens:
-
Chemical SPF: Absorbs UV rays and turns them into heat. Lightweight, but can irritate sensitive skin.
-
Mineral SPF (aka physical): Sits on top of the skin and deflects UV rays. Better for sensitive skin, skin prone to hyperpigmentation or post-treatment.

đź‘€ How Much SPF Should You Really Be Using?
Two words: generous application.
Use about a nickel-sized amount for your face and a shot glass for your body.
Don’t forget:
âś” Ears
âś” Neck
âś” Chest
âś” Hands
âś” Tops of feet
âś” Around hairline
âś” Under beard (yes, really)
